In 2013 the European Union banned animal testing which is a big win for our furry friends!  Check out this link to see which companies still use animals and which are animal friendly.  Please purchase goods that don't have animal testing. Your purchases matter!

If you're into coloring your hair in rainbow style check out Arctic Fox hair color- vegan and made in the USA. :) They also donate 15% of proceeds back to animal rescues like Marc Ching's Animal Hope and Wellness who rescues dogs from the dog meat trade in Asia.

I volunteer my time at NKLA events and at Beople's Buddies Animal Rescue here in Los Angeles. I also network dogs and cats on social media. I have three rescue animals myself- a cat and 2 dogs- and they are the loves of my life!  It is vital for us to stop purchasing dogs and cats from pet stores and start going to the shelters and rescues. There so many amazing animals at shelters who need homes. You can even find pure breeds.

Also Spay and Neuter your pets! It will help prevent overcrowding in shelters with subsequent needless death.

Food

Did you know that factory farming is some of the most inhumane ways we support the bad treatment of animals? Please get your meat from local sources and be mindful about where it's coming from. Most mainstream supermarkets do not carry meat that is humanely treated. Local butchers are a safer bet than getting your meat from a chain store. Shop at your farmer's market and ask questions about how the cows, chickens, fishies live...and also how they kill them.

Farmer's markets are also where purchasing eggs and milk is a good idea. Those mommy chickens are kept in horrible and filthy conditions in a lot of mainstream farming practices. And the Dairy cows are continually pregnant and milked. Once they stop producing they're killed. I don't drink milk but if I get eggs, I get them from Gama Farms.

Love Chocolate? Did you know that the yummy 'Engangered Species Chocolate' gives back?  10% of your purchase goes to an organization to help protect endangered animals. They support organizations like Chimp Haven- a sanctuary for chimps used for bio-medical research, the Rainforest Trust and the Wildlife Conservation Network.

A company called 'Eat Just' has released the first "Cultured Chicken' in a restaurant in Singapore. This is lab grown meat taken from chicken cells that do not come from slaughtered animals. They are still tweaking it but it's just a matter of time before this becomes available more widely and I'm excited to be able to switch my meat eating pets over to this kind of protein rather than the animals they are eating now.  Here's more about what's happening in that arena.

My Octopus Teacher is a beautiful and sentimental love story about a lost man who finds himself through an octopus he becomes friends with in the wild.- Netflix

2020

Kenya's Elephant population increased this year and poaching is down by record numbers because of more protection in place for them. Read about it here.

The Great Barrier Reef off of Australia has a new growth taller than the Empire State Building after the main reef was dying from touristing and warming water!

2018
Mexico City has officially banned "Dolphinariums'. This means Dolphins cannot be kept in tanks!

The USA's wild horses and burros are now protected as the president (probably inadvertantly) signed a bill that they could not be slaughtered or euthanized. Instead, horses, when removed from public land, would be used as work horses. (While, why not let them be wild is preferable in my book- at least this is a step in the right direction!).
